Ọ̀rọ̀ Yorùbá yi ba ìjọba Ìlúọba àti àwọn ará ìlú wi. Ìjọba njaya nítorí owó ti o nwọle kò kárí owó lati ṣe ọ̀pọ̀lọpọ̀ ẹ̀tọ́ ti àwọn ará ìlú nri gbà. Àwọn ti o si ngba ẹ̀tọ́ lọ́dọ̀ ìjọba njaya nítorí, ẹ̀tọ́ ti Ìjọba ndiku yio mu ìnira bá wọn nítorí ẹ̀dín owó yi bọ́sí àsìkò ọ̀wọ́n gógó oúnjẹ àti ohun ìtura míràn.

Gẹ́gẹ́bí ilé iṣẹ́ amóhùn máwòran Ìlúọba ti ròyìn, lati Oṣù kẹrin, ọjọ́ kini, ọdún ẹgbẹ̀rúnmẽjilemẹtala, Ìjọba Ìlúọba bẹ̀rẹ̀ ọ̀pọ̀lọpọ̀ àtúnṣe lati dín gbèsè ti ìlú jẹ ku; gbígba àwọn òṣìṣẹ́ ni ìyànjú ki wọn tẹra mọ́ṣẹ àti ki àwọn ti ko ṣiṣẹ́ le padà si ẹnu iṣẹ́. Díẹ̀ nínú àwọn àtúnṣe yi ni: ìdérí owó ìrànlọ́wọ́ si poun mẹrindinlọgbọn lọ́dún fún ìdílé; yíyọ owó fún yàrá tó ṣófo; àtúnṣe fún Ilé Ìwòsàn lapapọ àti bẹ̃bẹ lọ.

Yorùbá ni “Kòsọ́gbọ́n tí o lèda, kòsíwà tí o lèhù tí o lè fi tẹ ayé lórùn”, bí ọ̀pọ̀ ti nyin ìjọba bẹ̃ni ọ̀pọ̀ mbu ẹnu ẹ̀tẹ́ lu àtúnṣe wọnyi wípé Ìjọba ngba lọ́wọ́ aláìní fún àwọn tóní.

At this point, pigmies living in the forests of central Africa have probably heard about the sad case of Oscar Pistorius. For this blogger, I think there are more important lessons to be learnt from this allegation of premeditated murder — other than just going about the possible downfall of such a prodigy.

The old Yoruba saying goes that:

Éyin ti ájà bá kọkọ ni, ónilè ẹ lò fi n gè jẹ

Roughly translated, the saying means that the first set of teeth grown by the guard dog usually ends up being used to bite members of its owner’s household. This saying seems particularly well suited to the role of guns in society today. As a person who is still considering whether to own a handgun at home or not some time in the future, while living in America during this era of intense gun ownership debate, I am keenly aware of several pros and cons that have been put forward by many regarding gun ownership.
